Co-Parent Halloween Safety Tips
Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights for many kids. Co-parenting can be difficult, but by planning, coordinating schedules, and keeping the focus on the kids, you can make it a night to remember. By working as a team now, save yourself the stress of worrying on Halloween night.
Plan your Schedule Early
Talk in advance and decide what the plans are for the night and weekend of Halloween. Think about who’s taking the kids trick-or-treating or if you’ll share the time. Having a clear plan avoids last-minute confusion and helps the kids know what to expect.
Plan Costumes in Advance
Before the big night, double-check that costume are comfortable and visible when walking. Consider reflective tape, glow sticks, or light-up accessories to make kids more visible to cars. Comfortable shoes and sweaters are a must, too. If you're dressing up with your child or as a family, communicate that in advance.
Take and Send Photos
Send photos or videos of your child in their costume to the other parent so no one misses out on the memories.
Agree on Candy Rules
You both may have different rules on how much candy kids can have. Agree on some simple guidelines like checking candy before eating, setting limits, or donating excess candy. Consistency helps kids avoid confusion and makes transitions between homes smoother.
Consider Celebrating Together
If you’re in a good and safe place, a brief joint celebration can be meaningful and memorable for your child.
Keep It Kid-Focused
Put your child’s fun and comfort first, even if it means compromising on timing or traditions.
